Title: Over Raging Tides (Lady Pirates #1)
Author: Jennifer Ellision
Published: March 20th 2018
Genre: Fantasy & Young Adult

"The pirate crew of the Lady Luck lives by many rules, but chief among them is this: they do not allow men on board.

That’s a rule that quartermaster Grace Porter is willing to break when a shipwrecked young nobleman offers her information of an omniscient map, stolen from his warship by an enemy vessel. Until now, the map was only the stuff of legend… but with its help, Grace may finally be able to hunt down the Mordgris, the sea monsters who stole her mother away from her.

Unfortunately, some members of her crew have other plans...

To find the map and face the Mordgris, Grace will have to confront her past, put the Luck between warring nations, and uncover treachery aboard the ship. And ultimately, her revenge and the destruction of the Mordgris will come at a hefty price: the betrayal of her crew.

Grace promised them they wouldn’t regret this.

She just isn’t sure that she won’t.

Over Raging Tides is an ode to female empowerment, gender equality and an ode tolove whoever you want.

Female Pirates. Lady Luck is an all-female pirate ship. It's a haven from a world were men rule and believe women belong to the domestic sphere, cooking and taking care of the children. The ladies from Lady Luck show them how wrong they are. Whatever pirate men can do (looting, slaughtering and navigate unexplored waters), pirate women can do. Well, women can do it better.
Girl Gang. Who doesn't love a girl gang? However, I did have some issues with some of the crew members*cough Captain cough*, but I guess they were only being pirates and following rules...

Modgris. Like-shark monsters that can imitate and shape-shift into humans? That's bloody awesome! 😉 I quite enjoyed these murderous creatures woven by Ellision. The Modgris are terrifying sea monsters. Not only can they shred you to pieces with their teeth, but also can shatter your sanity.

Too short. I wish the story has been longer. I know it's part of the series, but the first book was too short! If it had had a few more pages, the characters (which lacked depth), the plot and the worldbuiling could have been better developed. I must confess that it made me feel cheated ... However, I definitely can't wait for Over Raging Tides sequel!

Thank you to Xpresso Book Tours and the author for providing me with a review copy in exchange for an honest review.

  1. Great review! This sounds like an entertaining and def unique read!

    1. Thank you, Giselle. It was indeed an entertaining read. Who doesn't love female pirates kicking butt (pardon my language)? Happy readings!;)

  2. Wow, this cover looks amazing :) pirates seem to have be the shizz right now! It's too bad that it was too short... But at least there's a sequel, right :)

    1. My request to be part of this tour probably had something to do with the cover *hides in shame*. =P I really hope the sequel is longer because no matter how great a story is if it's cut short, it loses something.

      Happy readings Evelina! :)
