Cover Reveal. Bright Smoke, Cold Fire by Rosamund Hodge

Tuesday, 9 February 2016

The cover of Bright Smoke, Cold Fire, the new series of Rosamund Hodge has been revealed. I do like, but nothing will ever beat the cover of Cruel Beauty, right? Well, I'm excited for this new series, even though Crimson Bound was very disappointing. Hopefully, it will be as good as the author's previous works.

Bright Smoke, Cold Fire is expected to be released on September 27th 2016.
"When the mysterious fog of the Ruining crept over the world, the living died and the dead rose. Only the walled city of Viyara was left untouched.

The heirs of the city’s most powerful—and warring—families, Mahyanai Romeo and Juliet Catresou share a love deeper than duty, honor, even life itself. But the magic laid on Juliet at birth compels her to punish the enemies of her clan—and Romeo has just killed her cousin Tybalt. Which means he must die.

Paris Catresou has always wanted to serve his family by guarding Juliet. But when his ward tries to escape her fate, magic goes terribly wrong—killing her and leaving Paris bound to Romeo. If he wants to discover the truth of what happened, Paris must delve deep into the city, ally with his worst enemy . . . and perhaps turn against his own clan.

Mahyanai Runajo just wants to protect her city—but she’s the only one who believes it’s in peril. In her desperate hunt for information, she accidentally pulls Juliet from the mouth of death—and finds herself bound to the bitter, angry girl. Runajo quickly discovers Juliet might be the one person who can help her recover the secret to saving Viyara.

Both pairs will find friendship where they least expect it. Both will find that Viyara holds more secrets and dangers than anyone ever expected. And outside the walls, death is waiting...

Review 9. Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

Title: Six of Crows
Author: Leigh Bardugo
Publisher: Henry Holt and Company
Published: September 29th 2015
Pages:
465 pages

"Ketterdam: a bustling hub of international trade where anything can be had for the right price--and no one knows that better than criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker. Kaz is offered a chance at a deadly heist that could make him rich beyond his wildest dreams. But he can't pull it off alone...

A convict with a thirst for revenge.

A sharpshooter who can't walk away from a wager.
A runaway with a privileged past.
A spy known as the Wraith.
A Heartrender using her magic to survive the slums.
A thief with a gift for unlikely escapes.

Six dangerous outcasts. One impossible heist. Kaz's crew is the only thing that might stand between the world and destruction--if they don't kill each other first. "

It was the first time I plunged in the Grisha World. Yes, I haven't read The Grisha Trilogy yet, but after reading Six of Crows, I definitely will. I can say that I fell in love with the world created by Leigh Bardugo. Six of Crows is a beautifully written blend of magic and darkness.

Plot: The plot could have been something simple. "Six dangerous outcasts" have to accomplish a dangerous and impossible heist. However, the development of the plot is intricate and the story is full of twists and action-packed. Who doesn't enjoy a story without a slow moment? With all the twists and surprises, there was no way to guess what happens next. The novel has just a little bit of romance which flows naturally and doesn't overshadows the main plot.

Characters: The story has five voices (even though there are six outcasts): the thief Kaz, the spy Inej, the Heartrender Nina, the convict Matheus and the sharpshooter Jesper. Wylan, the runway, doesn't have a chapter with his voice, but we get to know him. It could have been confusing following five different point-of-views, but each character has its own voice; each characters has its background and stories. Every character has a little something that makes him/her special and has its purpose in the novel. However, two of them stood out for me: Kaz and Inej.

Kaz is the perfect anti-hero. He's vicious and is always plotting. Not all main characters have to be good. I loved his cunning ways and how he always had something under is sleeve. He always comes across heartless, but an inside look on his past shows how he became the Dirtyhands and you can't stop feeling sorry for him. Now, my favourite of all favourites is Inej. I don't know if it's because of her backstory or her strengths and flaws, but I simply loved her. I always felt super excited to read her chapters. She is such a strong characters after everything she went through (Inej needed a hug). And, yes, I ship Kaz and Inej... They are two hurt souls that have the opportunity to find love in each other arms.

Six of Crows is one of my favourite readings. I am now impatiently waiting for Crooked Kingdom.

Cover Reveal. Den of Wolves by Juliet Marillier

Friday, 5 February 2016

Behold! The most beautiful cover ever! *.* Don't you find it gorgeous? Not only Juliet Marillier writes beautiful stories as her novels always have stunning covers. Den of Wolves is the third novel in the Blackthorn & Grim series and it may or it may not be the last one - either way, the author already announced that the ending works both ways. If you haven't read Dreamer's Pool and Tower of Thorns, I recommend you to do it because Juliet Marillier crafts the most beautiful worlds.

Den of Wolves is expected to be released in November 2016.
"The “powerful and emotionally-charged” fantasy series from the author of the Sevenwaters novels continues, as Blackthorn and Grim face haunting secrets and old adversaries...

Feather bright and feather fine, None shall harm this child of mine...

Healer Blackthorn knows all too well the rules of her bond to the fey: seek no vengeance, help any who ask, do only good. But after the recent ordeal she and her companion, Grim, have suffered, she knows she cannot let go of her quest to bring justice to the man who ruined her life.

Despite her personal struggles, Blackthorn agrees to help the princess of Dalriada in taking care of a troubled young girl who has recently been brought to court, while Grim is sent to the girl’s home at Wolf Glen to aid her wealthy father with a strange task—repairing a broken-down house deep in the woods. It doesn’t take Grim long to realize that everything in Wolf Glen is not as it seems—the place is full of perilous secrets and deadly lies...

Back at Winterfalls, the evil touch of Blackthorn’s sworn enemy reopens old wounds and fuels her long-simmering passion for justice. With danger on two fronts, Blackthorn and Grim are faced with a heartbreaking choice—to stand once again by each other’s side or to fight their battles alone..."

Waiting on Wednesday - These Vicious Masks

Wednesday, 3 February 2016

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week on WoW is These Vicious Masks by Tarun Shanker and Kelly Zekas. I'm a huge Jane Austen fan. I've been dreaming of a Mr. Darcy because of her. So as soon as I read "Jane Austen meets X-Men", I just knew I had to add this book to my wishlist. I probably have high expectations and I may end up disappointed, but oh well... It won't be the first time. The book will be released on February 9th.

Yearly Recap. 2015 Favorites

Sunday, 31 January 2016

January is ending and I'm only writing this now. Yeah, I'm kinda of lazy... But 20015 was a year of great readings even though I dealt with a huge reading slump. Here are some of my favorite books read in 2015.

An Ember in the Ashes, Sabaa Tahir. I can't believe how much I loved this book. I loved the plot, the characters (yes, even Laia, who was stronger than everyone thought she could be), the world-built...Everything was just perfect! PERFECT! I was so excited when I found out there was going to be a sequel (and probably a film)

A Court of Thorns and Roses, Sarah J. Mass. Beauty and the Beast retellings are my favourite and this one lived to its hype. A Court of Thorns and Roses was my first book from Sarah J. Maas and I was impressed by her (it's probably time to read Throne of Glass). I feel in love with this novel (hoping the sequel doesn't ruin it a beautiful story). From Tamlin's curse to Feyre's strong determination, everything was perfectly written.

Tower of Thorns, Juliet Marillier. Why everything Juliet Marillier writes is so amazingly perfect? All the feelings...If you haven't read any of her novels, I recommend you to do it because Juliet Marillier knows how to create a perfect world full of secrets and twists and romance. Tower of Thorns reveals more of Blackthorn and Grim's past, answering many questions from Dreamer's Pool. Currently waiting for Den of Wolfes, which may or not may be the last novel of Blackthorn & Grim (let's hope not)

Gilded Ashes, Rosamund Hodge. This is such a sweet yet dark retelling of Cinderella.  I wished it was not a novella but a novel. The plot had so much potential to be a long-story. And Maia was such a likable character.

To All the Boys I've Loved Before & P.S. I Still Love, Jenny Han. This sweet story made my heart melt and put a smile on my face. Sometimes all a reader needs is a light story with characters unbelievable-believable. Lara Jean and Peter won a place in my heart.

The Burning Sky & The Immortal Heights, Sherry Thomas. I confess that it took me sometime to get into these series, but when I did, I just couldn't put it down. The plot is different from all the others fantasy stories I read before, so thumbs up! Hopefully, I'll be reading The Immortal Heights soon.

The Book of Ivy, Amy Engel. This novel reminded me of what a good dystopia story looks like. Can you remember when was the last time a good dystopia was published? (After The Hunger Games, of course) I enjoyed the world-built and the characters. Ivy grew so much one me because she goes from a silly little girl to a strong woman.

Percy Jackson & The Olympians. I love Greek mythology. I remember trying to find every Greek myth when I was younger. Percy Jackson is perfect for someone who loves/is addicted to Greek mythology as I am. I regret not having read it sooner, because the moment I started reading Percy's adventures I couldn't stop.

Waiting on Wednesday - Assassin's Heart

Wednesday, 27 January 2016

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week on WoW is The Assassin's Heart by Sarah Ahiers. I feel in love instantly with the summary. Families of assassins, Romeo and Juliet vibes (I can read it for the Retelling Challenge 2016)... This seems an awesome novel! And it is the debut of Sarah Ahiers, so it's always great to read new authors. The book will be released on February 2nd.

"In the kingdom of Lovero, nine rival Families of assassins lawfully kill people for a price. As a highly skilled member of one of these powerful clans, seventeen-year-old Lea Saldana has always trusted in the strength of her Family. Until she awakens to find them murdered and her home in flames. The Da Vias, the Saldanas’ biggest enemy, must be responsible—and Lea should have seen it coming. But her secret relationship with the Da Vias’ son, Val, has clouded her otherwise killer instinct—and given the Da Vias more reason than ever to take her Family down.

Racked with guilt and shattered over Val’s probable betrayal, Lea sets out to even the score, with her heart set on retaliation and only one thought clear in her mind: make the Da Vias pay.

With shades of The Godfather and Romeo and Juliet, this richly imagined fantasy from debut author Sarah Ahiers is a story of love, lies, and the ultimate vengeance.

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week on WoW is The Siren by Kiera Cass. I read the first three novels of The Selection and I did enjoy it. So, I'm giving this book a chance. Also, because I haven't read a good mermaid story yet. And now I'm wondering if I can consider it a retelling... The book will be released on January 26th.
