Challenge: Favorite Bout of Books Moment

"With the read-a-thon starting to wind down, we want to see some of your favorite moments. These could be from past BoBs or the present one. Did you connect with someone who would later become your BFF and partner in crime? Did a favorite author retweet you? Were you recommended a book that changed your life? TELL US ABOUT IT!"

Here they are some of my favourite moments of past/present Bout of Books:
  • Winning a giveaway in Bout of Books 15. The challenge was a Scavenger Hunt hosted by The Book Monsters. I never win anything, so it was huge moment for me.
  • Meeting new blogs and bloggers. It's always great to find new booworms to follow and talk about books.
  • The challenges. I always have fun with the challenges. Taking photos, drawing, making recommendations... There is always so much to do!

Here it's my huge fail at taking a creepy photo to celebrate Friday the 13th.  At least, it has a big scary spider, right?

Challenge: If You Like This, Try This

"Since we all love recommending books, here's your chance to share the love. Example: If you like paranormal romance with bloodthirsty vikings, try Shelly Laurenston's Call of Crows series. Make sure you use the hashtag #boutofbooks on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook, so we can see your recs."

If you liked A Thousand Nights by E.K. Johnston ....
  • try The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi. Both novels are beautifully written and are full of magic. The protagonists are strong and are able to do everything in their power to protect those they love.

If you liked Matched by Ally Condie...
  • try The Book of Ivy by Amy Engel. Both feature a dystopian community where love is chosen by others.

Waiting on Wednesday - This Savage Song

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week on this late WoW is This Savage Song by  Victoria Schwab. I feel embarrassed to confess that I haven't read anything from Victoria Schwab - but I plan on! I have A Darker Shade of Magic on my TBR pile. So why is this book on my wishlist? I loved the summary - violent acts that summon real monsters? A bloodsucking Malchai? A clawing Corsai? And soul-stealing Sunai? Must read it! The book will be released on June 7th (or July 5th, depends on the edition you wish - UK or US).

"There’s no such thing as safe in a city at war, a city overrun with monsters. In this dark urban fantasy from acclaimed author Victoria Schwab, a young woman and a young man must choose whether to become heroes or villains—and friends or enemies—with the future of their home at stake. The first of two books, This Savage Song is a must-have for fans of Holly Black, Maggie Stiefvater, and Laini Taylor.

Kate Harker and August Flynn are the heirs to a divided city—a city where the violence has begun to breed actual monsters. All Kate wants is to be as ruthless as her father, who lets the monsters roam free and makes the humans pay for his protection. All August wants is to be human, as good-hearted as his own father, to play a bigger role in protecting the innocent—but he’s one of the monsters. One who can steal a soul with a simple strain of music. When the chance arises to keep an eye on Kate, who’s just been kicked out of her sixth boarding school and returned home, August jumps at it. But Kate discovers August’s secret, and after a failed assassination attempt the pair must flee for their lives. In This Savage Song, Victoria Schwab creates a gritty, seething metropolis, one worthy of being compared to Gotham and to the four versions of London in her critically acclaimed fantasy for adults, A Darker Shade of Magic. Her heroes will face monsters intent on destroying them from every side—including the monsters within.

Challenge: 5 Favorites

"Everybody loves sharing favorites and now we're giving you free rein to do just that. Pick the topic of your choice and share your 5 favorite books that fit. Topics could be a favorite genre, a favorite trope, book boyfriends, or ANYTHING. There's no limit to where you can take this!"

If you have been following me for some time, it comes to no surprise the topic I chose: Favourite Fairytale Retellings

Heart's Blood, Juliet Marillier. This is my favourite fairytale retelling of all time. It made me fall in love with fairytale retellings. By now, you can tell how much I adore it because I'm always talking about it. I feel in love with Caitrin and Anluan's story and I'm sure you'll too if you haven't read it yet.

Daughter of the Forest, Juliet Marillier. Part of the Sevenwaters trilogy, is a retelling loosely based on The Six Swans. It's incredible well-written. I feel very angry at myself because I haven't read its sequels (but I'll read them; I swear I will).

A Thousand Nights, E.K. Johnston. This retelling of One Thousand Nights is simply beautiful. There is something magical in E. K. Johnston writing that brings such a realness to the novel that you can put it down.

Cruel Beauty, Rosamund Hodge. Beauty and the Beast mixed with Greek mythology? This retelling was written for me. I wasn't very fond of the ending, but  the story is very well written and Ignifex is an alluring character.

Gilded Ashes, Rosamund Hodge. This one is only a novella, but I wish it was a novel. Hodge did such an amazing job retelling Cinderella's tale - she even used its dark side. I loved Maia. It's my favourite work from the author.

Cover Reveal. Spindle

The cover for Spindle, A Thousand Nights companion, has been revealed. I think I like this cover. The cover alludes to the fairytale that it's based on, The Sleeping Beauty (even if at a first glance, the spindle seemed an alien-ship). I adored A Thousand Nights because of E. K. Johnston's magical writing, so I can't wait to read Spindle and see if it's as beautifully written. .

Spindle is expected to be released on December 6th 2016.
"The world is made safe by a woman...but it is a very big world.

It has been generations since the Storyteller Queen drove the demon out of her husband and saved her country from fire and blood. Her family has prospered beyond the borders of their village, and two new kingdoms have sprouted on either side of the mountains where the demons are kept prisoner by bright iron, and by the creatures the Storyteller Queen made to keep them contained.

But the prison is crumbling. Through years of careful manipulation, a demon has regained her power. She has made one kingdom strong and brought the other to its knees, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. When a princess is born, the demon is ready with the final blow: a curse that will cost the princess her very soul, or force her to destroy her own people to save her life.

The threads of magic are tightly spun, binding princess and exiled spinners into a desperate plot to break the curse before the demon can become a queen of men. But the web of power is dangerously tangled--and they may not see the true pattern until it is unspooled.
