Bout of Books 26. Sing Up, Progress & Wrap Up

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda Shofner and Kelly Rubidoux Apple. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, August 19th and runs through Sunday, August 25th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, Twitter chats, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 26 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. - From the Bout of Books team

After constantly forgetting to sign up for the last two Bout of Books (if you have been following me, you may realize the reasons why I haven't remembered this challenge), I'm finally joining Bout of Books 26. I could not end the year without joining at least once one my favourite read-a-thons. I'm very excited about this week and, as always, my goal is to make a huge dent on my always growing TBR pile - since the last time I joined this challenge, the pile has grow a lot!

My goals for Bout of Books 26 Read-a-Thon are:
  1. To read every day 50 pages;
  2. To participate in two challenges;
  3. To update my progress every day.

Challenge: Adaptation Aspiration.What book would you like to see adapted for another medium?
I shared a discussion post about seven books-to-series adaptations that I'd love to watch a few months ago. I'm now adding to this list the Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden. This trilogy is filled with mythology, folk tales and creatures described in detail and the descriptions of the wintry Russian wilderness are enthralling. Watching all of these come alive in a TV show would be breathtaking. Moreover, this trilogy takes place during a time of transition from paganism to Christianity, a time surrounded by the fear and the anxiety bought by the arrival of a new religion. The historic side would translate perfectly on the show.

Challenge: Recreate Your Favourite Book Cover. Pick your favourite book and recreate it OR reimagine the cover either live (with yourself or a willing participant as the cover art) or drawing, sculpture, crafts, painting, etc.

I wanted to created a book aesthetic, but sadly I didn't have the time to do it. 😭

Challenge: If This, Then That. Put your recommendations hat on, #boutofbooks-ers. For this challenge, pick a book, author, or trope (or whatever!) from your TBR and suggest similar books.

This is actually one of my favourite challenges and I'm always happy to find as part of this read-a-thon. This time, I'm doing it a little bit differently - I usually pick book, but this time I'll go with themes.
  • If you love siren/mermaid mythology and witches, than you should read The Wicked Deep by Shea Earnshaw;
  • If you love Asian-inspired worlds and strong female characters that dress up like boys, than you should read Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim;
  • If you love dark fairytale retellings and eerie/Gothic settings, than you should read House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig.

Challenge: I Want This Book. Tell us about your favorite story (can be anything - play, TV show, movie, podcast, web series) that you would like to be adapted into a novel!

Okay, this challenge is harder than I thought it would be since I'm a lover of retellings and I'm always up to any story turned into a book. So, which story would I like to be adapted into a novel? 🤔

I'll get back to it a in few hours. Or days. Or months...

Challenge: Leave a Review. Did you know? Book reviews help other readers discover new books.

Every time I finish a book, I've trying to share my thoughts on it - even if it's only a very short review on Goodreads. You may find my thoughts on City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty here and on An Assassin's Guide to Love and Treason by Virginia Boecker here.

Challenge: Stretch Goal. It's the last day of the readathon, so today's challenge is to take a look at the goals you set for the week (if you have them) and decide a) how you can stretch yourself to complete them or b) how you can revise them so you can meet them.

I've met all of my goals, so...

WRAP UP

Although I met my goals, I only finished two books (both started before day one of Bout of Books), which means I didn't make a dent on my TBR pile as I wished to. I also started two new books and hopefully I'll finish them before August ends.

How many books did you tackle down? How many pages did you read? Is you TBR pile shorter?
Hope to see everyone on the next Bout of Books. 😊
