"A princess, a traitor, a soldier, a hunter and a thief.

Five teenagers with the fate of the world in their hands.
Five nations destined for conflict.

In Brigant, Princess Catherine prepares for a political marriage arranged by her brutal and ambitious father, while her true love, Ambrose, faces the executioner's block.

In Calidor, downtrodden servant March seeks revenge on the prince who betrayed his people. In Pitoria, feckless Edyon steals cheap baubles for cheaper thrills as he drifts from town to town.

And in the barren northern territories, thirteen-year-old Tash is running for her life as she plays bait for the gruff demon hunter Gravell.

As alliances shift and shatter, and old certainties are overturned, our five heroes find their past lives transformed and their futures inextricably linked by the unpredictable tides of magic and war.

Who will rise and who will fall? And who will claim the ultimate prize?
"

A princess, a soldier, a hunter, a traitor, a thief and DEMONS. Welcome to The Smoke Thieves.

PROS

obviously Demons. Magical creatures, good or bad, always steal my heart. I'm so excited about book number two because I want to learn more about these beautiful red, orange and purple creatures and their world. Oh, and about demon smoke.

And this leads me to...

TASH! A spunky thirteen year-old demon hunter. At first, she did annoy me because all she could think about was buying some damn boots (I'm with you Gravell, she doesn't need another pair of boots), but then her I-will-kick-your-butt attitude grew on me.

Female power. Sadly, women always lived (and still do) in a society where they are perceived as well and less than men. Catherine's journey from an oppressed princess to a woman who speaks her mind shows that women have the power to forge their paths. But, most important, they are as strong as men.

CONS

Where are my plot twists?! I love plot twists. I live for them! I'm not saying the book is predictable, however, there are clues since the beginning of where the story is going, so, in the end, there were no surprising twists.

And, only one death made my heart ache.

Edyon. It annoyed me how he could be freezing to death (and running to save his life) and all he could think about was having March on a bed. I was hoping for a Jesper-Wylan cute-dangerous love story, but Edyon ended being too pushy (it's not okay to be pushy) and made their relationship a bit uncomfortable.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with a review copy in exchange for an honest review.

  2. Lovely review! I have a copy of this sitting on my shelves but haven't had the time to read it yet. It sounds like a great fantasy, though, so I may need to bump it up my TBR a little :)

Great review :) I've heard mixed things about this book, and it's a pity there're no twists in the plot :( Good plot twists make everything better.
Hope your next read is better!

    1. Yes, I did. Awww, thank you. I'm really happy how my blog looks right now. :) The lack of plot twists was a let down, but it was still an enjoyable reading.

  4. That's a bummer that there are't enough plot twists in the book. It still sounds pretty good though. I'll probably check it out of the library at some point. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it!

    1. Although it lacks plots twists (you could see everything coming a mile away), The Smoke Thieves was still an enjoyable reading - some of the characters and themes made me for it.

      Happy readings! ;)

  5. Excellent review. I'm not sure what to think about Smoke Thieves, I really enjoyed Sally Green's last series so I was excited for this one but it took my like two years to pick up the first book in that series after I'd bought it so I feel like this may be another one like that for me. We shall see.
